"it is our duty to hate [(odire)], in the sinner, his being a sinner, and to love [(diligere)] in him, his being a man capable of bliss. And this [(hoc)] is to love him truly, out of charity, for God's sake [(eos vere ex caritate diligere, propter Deum)]."
St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa theologiae II-II.25.6.Resp., trans. FEDP. Corpus Thomisticum. Yet another example, among undoubtedly thousands, of a profoundly Christian (albeit even perfectly natural) distinction that, though very widely abominated today (including by many foolish Christians), is indispensable. One might even say that it is a distinctio sine qua nulla salus.
