"In the groves of their academy, at the end of every visto, you see nothing but the gallows."

     Edmund Burke, Reflections on the revolution in France (1790), 2nd ed. (London:  J. Dodsley, 1790), 126-127.  According to the OED, visto was, through the end of the 18th century, an acceptable way of spelling vista.
