Doctrinal confidence

"[Maritain's] formula for Christian power under pluralism doesn't require Christian perfection—nobody wold call America's nineteenth-century establishment perfect—but it does require some degree of doctrinal confidence. . . ."

Ross Douthat, "A gentler Christendom," First things no. 324 (June/July 2022):  31 (27-34).  ". . . some responsible fit between ecclesiastical structures and social trends, some clear sense of missionary zeal" (cf. "the desperate chasing after political causes to make up for the waning of missionary zeal" from the 1960s on).
